7 ways to keep your skin glowing this summer
The changing seasons mean changes in your skin! Start thinking about your skin hydration strategy before those summer months roll in and you find yourself in reparation mode, trying to heal dry skin and cover up sun spots. Here are 7 ways to keep your skin hydrated and healthy so that you can bask in the summer fun without worrying about how your skin looks and feels.
Up your H2O
Keep your body hydrated from the inside out! It’s tempting to grab a cold beer or a flirty umbrella drink by the pool, but don’t forget about the water! Elevated temperatures and increased outdoor time can lead to dehydration, which can result in fainting, weakness, or dull and dry skin. As you lose more water through increased perspiration over the summer, it’s crucial to replace the H2O before it’s too late. The Mayo Clinic states that men should drink 3.7 liters of water per day and women should drink 2.7 liters. Try increasing your fruit intake by consuming water-packed cucumbers, watermelons, or oranges, to help with staying hyrdrated.
Break your routine
Modify your moisturizers and switch out your soaps! We all have our go-to facial cleanser or must-have moisturizer, but listen to your skin, as it might require some extra TLC when the temps start to soar. Your skin’s needs might change over the summer, so it’s ok to alter your skincare routine and incorporate new products. Your face tends to produce more oil during the summer months, so opt for an oil-free or water-based cleanser to complement your natural oil production. Try new products on small areas of your skin to ensure that there won’t be a reaction to a new ingredient that your skin isn’t used to yet.
Just because winter is over, it doesn’t mean that you can pack up all of your moisturizers and wait until the snowy season rolls around again! The Midwest heat and summer rays can be harsh on our skin, which might require an increase in moisturization for our summer routine. Incorporate an intensive masque to ensure that your face stays hydrated throughout the week. Apply moisturizer right after you get out of the shower so it easily soaks in, and opt for a cream, serum, or oil, depending on the nature of your skin; the last thing you want to do is cause breakouts!
Let your skin breathe
With the increase in perspiration and the excess in oils, it’s always a good idea to give your skin a break. It’s hot and humid outside, so go easy on the makeup; it’s probably just going to melt off anyway, and it’ll give your pores a much needed moment to step away from all of the products. If you must wear makeup to work or an important event, make it a priority to cleanse your skin the minute you get home; the more moments you have makeup-free, the more time your skin has to relax. If you absolutely cannot live without foundation (we know, it’s hard), try a tinted moisturizer that has a more natural feel and isn’t so harsh on your skin’s health.
Give your skin a gentle scrub at least once a week to let your natural glow surface! A light exfoliation will slough off dead skin cells that dull your complexion and prevent your moisturizers from penetrating your pores. This will allow your hydration efforts to sink in more effectively over the summer, rather than remaining on the surface. Make your own exfoliant by combining organic sugar or sea salt with olive oil or avocado; there are lots of natural home remedies that’ll do the trick! Remember, don’t scrub too hard or exfoliate too often; you don’t want to damage your delicate skin!
We all deserve a spa day (or hour) whether you’re a CEO, stay-at-home mom, or anything in between! Pamper yourself this summer by trying out a treatment that’ll leave your skin supple and refreshed! A hydrafacial incorporates medical-grade exfoliating, cleansing, and moisturizing to maximize your natural glow, and you can just sit back and enjoy the pampering! Your skin will also receive a boost of antioxidants and peptides to ensure that you look and feel your best. Once you see the results, hydrafacials might just become your new (healthy) addiction!
Protect your skin
The strength of the sun’s rays is heightened over these intense upcoming summer months! You may feel extra beautiful with tanned skin, but it’s crucial to remember that sunburned or tanned skin is actually damaged skin. Opt for a sunless tanner to create that sunkissed glow without the harmful health issues. Wear sunscreen every day (in every season) to not only prevent cancer and premature aging, but to keep your skin protected; exposed skin is damaged skin! It can raise your risk of serious future health issues and it severely dries out your skin, bringing on early wrinkles and sun spots.
Winter is finally over (we think), so it’s time to officially look forward to the warmth of the summer rays, the backyard bbqs, and all the fun-in-the-sun that we’ve been patiently waiting for! Don’t forget about your skin this summer; think about your skincare routine and make time to take care of yourself. Pop in to Eastland Face & Body to check out our line or moisturizers or to schedule a pampering treatment, such as a hydrafacial or chemical peel. We’d love to help you put your best face forward this summer and let your beauty shine from the inside out!
