5 hair removal tips for your face and body

5 hair removal tips for your face and body

Whether you’re self-conscious about quick-growing underarm hair or you are in a constant battle with leg stubble, hair removal can be a tricky endeavor. It is hard to know what is best for your skin, schedule, and wallet with so many options on the market! Here are some insights into hair removal and some tips to give your skin that touchably smooth feeling, just in time for swimsuit season!

Consider hair growth pattern

Make sure that you hit all of the major hair growth patterns when shaving or waxing! Sometimes it is hard to predict which direction will give us the smoothest shave, especially when each area of our body differs by nature. Underarm air is particularly difficult due to the variety of growth patterns in such a small area. Shave in the direction of your hair growth first and then go against the grain for a closer shave. Don’t be afraid to go upwards, downwards, and side-to-side to ensure that you get all of those stubborn hairs!

Hydrate your skin

Moisturizing is so important whether you are shaving, waxing, or going au naturel. Although daily moisturization is recommended for any area of skin, at least hydrate your skin 2 consecutive days before shaving or waxing, and 3 consecutive days after removal. When your skin is well-hydrated, the chances of skin irritation, razor burn, and nicks decreases considerably when shaving. You have a better chance at longer-lasting smoothness because the hair will break away from the skin more easily when it’s not begging for moisture!

Laser it off for good

Laser sessions are a fast and effective way of getting rid of hair for an extended period of time. Worried about the pain? It’s not more painful than waxing! It lasts only minutes and feels similar to a rubber band being snapped on your skin. If you can tolerate the stinging sensation, you will walk away with smooth skin with only a handful of sessions, depending on the area. Laser hair removal is a great solution for long-term hair removal and allows you to eliminate it from your weekly routine. Not ready to get rid of all of your forearm hair, but just want a decrease in appearance? That can be accomplished with less sessions!

Let the professionals do their job

We’ve all helped a friend with their brows or accomplished a self-waxing session at home, but it’s not always the most convenient way to get rid of hair, and sometimes we don’t get the best results either! Although more costly, heading to a salon or spa for a waxing or laser session has its perks. Don’t waste time watching YouTube videos and don’t take the risk of messing it up the week before your wedding. Treat yourself to a brow, waxing, or laser session to ensure top results, while letting yourself take a break and be pampered.

Check your medications

Before you schedule a waxing session at your local salon, meet with a professional to ensure that any medications you are taking will not affect your results. Pay special attention to your face and stop using retinoids which are often found in wrinkle- or acne-fighting products. Your waxed skin can become damaged, burned, or red in reaction to the session. Stop using OTC or prescription strength retinoids at least a week before your waxing appointment. We aren’t joking when we say that the top layer of your skin can literally be ripped off with the wax, if you’re not careful with your topical meds and hair removal. Chat with a professional before your treatment to make sure that you’re taking the safest route for your skin.

Other tips

Here are a few other tips to consider, no matter what your method of removal!

  • Pop some ibuprofen an hour before your waxing session to minimize the pain (don’t down a glass of wine, it’ll make you more sensitive to the pain).
  • For best waxing results, your hair should be ¼ inch long for fine hair and ½ inch long if it’s course.
  • Be cautious with depilatory cream if you have sensitive skin or eczema; test cream on a small area first to avoid breakouts and irritation.
  • You get a closer shave in the evening. Your legs swell slightly while sleeping, hiding a portion of the hairs, making your morning shaving session less effective (don’t do it during a hot bath, either!).
